Cheltenham Town's match against Bolton Wanderers was abandoned on Sunday after a medical emergency. The incident occurred when a 71-year-old fan, Iain Purslow, suffered a cardiac arrest during the game.
What happened?
The fan, who was watching the game with his son, Stuart, fell ill midway through the first half. Dozens of supporters in the East Stand yelled out and gestured for the game to be halted.
The response
Lee Parker, a retired paramedic, was one of the first to react, running up from his post at pitch-side. He continued fervent CPR for 20 minutes before passing on to another medical team.
The aftermath
The referee took just two minutes to lead the players off the pitch. The decision to abandon the game was unquestionably the right call, given the gravity of the situation.
