Andi Weimann Joins Cheltenham Town: 'A Lot of Football Left in Me'
Austrian forward Andi Weimann, 35, has signed with Cheltenham Town for the upcoming 2026/27 season, bringing his extensive experience to the League Two club. The move comes after a series of stints with Premier League and Championship sides, including Aston Villa, Derby County, Bristol City, and Blackburn Rovers, as well as a loan spell with Rapid Vienna.
Weimann, who has made over 400 Championship appearances, is excited about his new challenge. 'I am delighted to be here and to get it done,' he said. 'I can’t wait to get going. I still have a lot of football left in me and I am still pretty fit, so hopefully I can give a lot on the pitch, but also off it because I have seen a lot of things in football. I have been around it for nearly 20 years, so hopefully I can be someone to learn from if anyone needs help.'
Weimann's journey in football began at Aston Villa, where he made his Premier League debut against West Ham in 2010. He later scored his first top-flight goal in 2012/13 and remained a regular in the Premier League until 2015, when he moved to Derby County for £2.5m. He also had a loan spell at Wolves and signed for Bristol City in 2018, where he played alongside current Cheltenham defenders Robbie Cundy and George Nurse.
Weimann also earned 26 caps for the Austrian national team, scoring his first international goal against France in 2022. 'Rapid Vienna are the team I supported as a kid, so it was nice to play for them,' he said. 'It was also tough because my wife and kids stayed here, so I was by myself for three months. I've had some really good conversations with the manager in the last few days and it came out of nowhere a little bit. It was like the first day of school on Friday, walking in and you are a bit nervous, but everyone seems really nice so far. I will give 100 per cent as I always have done and I’d say all the managers I've played for have liked that. The fans will see that I give everything and I have scored goals throughout my career.'
