Cheltenham Town secured a 2-1 home win against Chesterfield on Saturday to strengthen their position near the top of League Two. Goals from Charlie McCann and the 37th minute strike from Andreas Weimann in the first half proved enough despite a dominant statistical display from the visitors.
The victory keeps Cheltenham second in the table with 15 points from their opening eight games. McCann opened the scoring after 17 minutes, finishing an assist from Ryan Broom for his sixth goal in seven matches since joining the club. Weimann doubled the lead twenty minutes later, converting a cross from defender Jonathan Tomkinson.
Chesterfield pressure
Chesterfield, who had won their previous two league games, responded quickly after the break. Louie Marsh pulled a goal back just four minutes into the second half to set up a tense finish. The Spireites dominated possession with 66% and fired 27 shots, forcing Cheltenham goalkeeper Will Stanway into ten saves. Cheltenham’s defence held firm under pressure, with the team picking up four yellow cards during the match.
Manager Paul Cook had noted his side's good form ahead of the trip to the EV Charger Points Stadium. "The Spireites are going for a third league win in a row as they head to the EV Charger Points Stadium to face Cheltenham Town," he said. The result extends Cheltenham's unbeaten run to five matches, a sequence that includes three draws and two wins. They now prepare for their next fixture, an away trip to face Accrington Stanley on October 3. Check the full schedule on our fixtures page.
