Cheltenham Town miss four key players ahead of Swindon trip

Key Absences

Cheltenham Town are set to start their League Two campaign against Swindon Town with a squad missing four first-team regulars. Shaun McWilliams, who had to leave the 2-1 win over Rotherham United at half-time with a groin injury, is expected to miss the match as he continues his recovery. George Miller is also doubtful after a thigh problem that has left him out of training. James Wilson, who had just returned from a calf injury, is unlikely to be available after the club’s 0-0 draw with Northampton Town last week. Favour Onukwuli, who was on trial with Swindon this summer, suffered a hamstring injury that will sideline him for the next three months. The Robins’ manager Steve Cotterill said in a pre-match press conference that “George Miller’s thigh is a little bit worse than Shaun McWilliams’ groin, but they’ve both been back out on the grass.” He added that one player will not be available for the weekend and the other may be too early to risk.

Squad Options

With the loss of four key attackers, Cotterill will have to rely on a limited set of options. New signing Andreas Weimann is still settling in and is not yet ready for a starting role. The likely first-choice forwards will be Promise Otchere and Jake Bickerstaff, both of whom have been involved in the early part of the season. The absence of Wilson, who was expected to be out for another two weeks, further reduces the attacking depth. The Robins will therefore need to rely on their remaining forwards to provide the firepower needed to secure a win.

Swindon’s Injury List

Swindon Town are also dealing with a number of injuries. Joseph Hungbo is expected to miss the match, joining Paul Glatzel, Joe Snowdon and Fletcher Holman in the injury list. The club’s manager Ian Holloway will have to choose from Aaron Drinan, Ollie Palmer, Jaylan Pearman and Louis Millard for his front three. The match will be Swindon’s first home game of the season at the County Ground, and they are hoping for a first home win in five against Cheltenham, the last of which was won by Paul Benson in 2012.
